The 20th Century – Age of Technology
Perhaps no era has experienced a boom of inventions other than the 20th century. From the start until to its very last year, technological advancements and contributions were made. Every year during that phase, someone handed out some technological innovation; from food to electronics to medicine to entertainment and the arts, the 20th century never ran out of fresh ideas.
In the early 20th century, the modern escalator was invented (1900); Gillette razors were already the best a man can get (1901); nobody could lie to James Mackenzie with his lie detector (1902) and Willis Carrier chilled with the world’s first air conditioner (1902).
By 1923, traffic ran smoothly with Garrett Morgan’s traffic signal. Four years later in 1927, the first electronic television system was ushered by Philo Taylor Farnsworth. The first quartz timepiece also came in 1927 and was introduced by Warren Morrison. In 1928, Jacob Schick patented the world’s first electric shaver.
The later part of the 20th century witnessed the advent of computer and software wizards Bill Gates, Michael Dell, and Steve Jobs, and their mega companies into the software industry.
The 20th century saw other feats that have changed the course of human lives including the atomic bomb and space exploration. Microwave ovens made a breakthrough in cooking standards. The 20th century was a marvelous age notably because of the technologies that emerged during that period.
Of late, man has enjoyed the wonders of the Internet, breaking geographical, social, even economic barriers and opening the gates of information and communication to societies around the globe.
On a lighter note, the Teddy bear was born in 1902.
